WACKER announces scholarships for three high schools

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (April 17, 2009)—Wacker Chemical Corporation has announced the creation of an academic scholarship for each of the three high schools in Bradley County.

The announcement was made this week during the annual “Salute to Education” presented by the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce.

Named the “WACKER Spirit of Innovation” Valedictorian Scholarship Award, the $1,000 scholarship will be presented at awards ceremonies at Bradley Central, Cleveland and Walker Valley High Schools beginning this year to the student with the highest grade-point average.

In the event of a tie, the student with the highest grade-point average coupled with the highest ACT or SAT composite score will receive the scholarship.

“Wacker Chemical Corporation wants to establish a community presence even before we break ground in north Bradley County,” said Bill Toth, manager of corporate communications at Wacker Chemical Corporation in Adrian, Mich.

Toth continued, “Wacker is attentive to sustainability driven by discipline, including academic excellence. We view these scholarships as part of our core values and a contribution to the well-being of Cleveland and Bradley County where we ultimately will manufacture and sell.”

Gary Farlow, Chamber president, responded to the establishment of the new scholarships.

“We were pleasantly surprised that Wacker is participating in the community even before they’ve turned a spade of dirt on their property,” Farlow said. “But the announcement of this wonderful scholarship demonstrates their commitment to Bradley County and our education system. We can be assured that Wacker Chemical Corporation will be a good corporate citizen.”

The “WACKER Spirit of Innovation” Scholarship will be presented to a qualified student at Bradley Central High School on April 26,  Walker Valley High School on May 12 and Cleveland High School on May 21. Recipients must attend an accredited college or university and must attend the school stipulated.

“We have had this scholarship program in Adrian for quite sometime,” Toth explained. “We want to implement it in Bradley County now as an ongoing commitment to rewarding educational excellence in the community.”
